After reading the discussion about letting watermelons wander over
the lawn, I was reminded of the summer we planted all our melons in
mounds on the back lawn. We made mounds using 2 40-lb. sacks of
manure (composted) and a wheelbarrow full of compost. We planted
cantaloupe and two kinds of watermelons. The vines went everywhere,
and we ignored the mowing. Actually the grass didn't get too high,
because the vines shaded it. Every melon was propped up on a coffee
can or flower pot to keep it off the damp grass. Those melons were
some of the best, and most prolific. One mound of cantaloupe (3 plants)
yielded 42 melons. After the harvest, we shredded the vines with
the mower and added them to the compost heap. The leftover mound was
spread over the St. Augustine grass. It acted like a stimulant and
the grass came back verdant green. Just thought I'd pass on the
experience.
