I have clay soil too, so i've been following this thread closely.

Every source i read and every person i hear from says that adding sand to
clay soil will produce something resembling concrete. The universal
recommendation is organic matter--compost and peat moss. Other possibilities
previously mentioned in this thread include perlite, gypsum and vermiculite.
