Sorry to disagree, but people have been adding sand to clay successfully
for uncounted years, and I am speaking of people (including me) who know
concrete when they see it. NOT playbox sand, though .. builders' sand
.. coarse sand, that is.
But there are different types of clay, and sand does not work
well with all types. Take a soil sample to your extension office (or
wherever they suggest you send it) and get the benefit of good advice.
There are many good ways to amend the soil and organic material
is of course great .. truly a necessity .. but, if you have more soil
than money, and if you have the right kind of clay, a good healthy dose
of sand is an excellent way to get things started the first year.
