Kim,
I planted the seeds directly in the rich mixture. The manure was
composted, so there was no burn. Melons love rich soil. And my compost
is full of lots of organic stuff to mellow the manure punch. I watered
with a sprinkler, when I watered the lawn. I also pushed a coffee can
with its bottom removed into each mound. I would let the hose trickle
into the cans for an hour once a week or whenever the melon leaves
wilted--when days hit 100 degrees!
Try the mounds--they work.
