I have heard many contradictary things about adding sand to a clay soil. I
have added only a little sand to certain spots of my hard packed 90+% clay,
rest silt, soil in trying to break it up. The result was less than
impressive, OK when wet, but hard as a rock when it dried up. Other people
I have talked to have reported great results by adding tons of sand to
their clay.
About the best thing I have done was add tons of compost and green manures.
Made the soil in my garden beds friable in about two years.
