Starting Asparagus Seeds

Does anyone know when asparagus seeds should be planted?  The packet I
have says, "sow in early Spring."  Does that mean before last frost?  I
know it takes a year before you can harvest, but that's all I know, so
any information on spacing, etc. is also welcome!

Also, I'm guessing it should be sown directly into the ground and not
started indoors?

Does anyone know of a good web resource for planting dates (I'm also
puzzled over how and when to strat my nasturtiums)?  I have Mel's book,
but he doesn't cover these.
