Greetings, I wanted to run a few ideas by the group before I make a decision. This is our first square foot garden and is being constructed from scratch in a place where there has never been a garden. However, the soil is very fertile and does not contain much clay (it was once part of an orchard/alfalfa field) In addition to that, we plan on supplementing it with manure that has composted in the old corrals. Well, it turns out that the cinder blocks are more expensive than we thought they would be and since things are tight this year, that will not be an option. Therefore, we came up with the following ideas: a) plant in square foot pattern with no raised bed or border this year b) line the boarders with large river rocks (readily available on our own property) and have a slightly raised bed c) obtain a permit from the forest service to gather fallen aspen logs and use them as borders. What do you think would be our best option?
