Re: Raised Bed ?s

I would do the 4' x 12' beds. The 6' wide beds would be to wide to reach the
middle without stepping on the dirt. I would use a nursery type black plastic
( lets water through, but not weeds) rather than just plastic. Compost is a
good filler, but I would add perillite and some growers mix. Both of these
should be advailable at your local nursery type store. Please do a soil test
on your materials before you add them to the raised beds. That way you can
amend the mixture to correct any problems you may have with P.H. While your
going to all this work might I suggest that its very easy to run p.v.c. pipe
under the raised beds at this time to allow a sprinkler system to be
installed.. Space heads at 8' apart and 4' from the ends. They make a very
nice low pressure mister spray head that will do a great job of watering a 4'
square. One head per 4' area and a p.v.c. valve to turn it on/ off. It takes
me 7' minutes to water my (16) 4'x4' squares to a soil depth of 6". I do this
every other day. I hope this helps............Wooddon@aol.com
