I'm getting ready to take the asparagus plunge myself this season, so I've
been watching the catalogs intently. Most carry both 1-year-old crowns and
2-year-old crowns, with the latter costing maybe 30 percent more.
ONE catalog, but I've been so stupid as to forget which, carries 3-year-old
crowns.
A month ago, I put a request for specifics into rec.gardens on this matter
but got zero replies. I asked experienced asparagus growers to comment on
the wisdom of shelling out the big bux for the 3-year-old crowns.
I believe one is expected to get "a few" spears to harvest in the first
season after planting the 2-year-olds, and a full crop in year 3 and
thereafter. Probably you don't get anything worth heating up the
hollandaise for with 1-year-old crowns until another entire 2-year period in
the ground has elapsed. Who knows what the seed-planters get and when. I
definitely can't wait THAT long.
