Regarding bonemeal, my horticulture instructor at Triton College (a juco in
River Park, IL, outside Chicago) told our houseplant class in 1974 that it
was fine to put bonemeal into the planting hole before inserting tulip
bulbs--if you didn't mind the fact that the nutrients wouldn't be released
for 20 years.
