RE: Garden Size Question

Kurt,

I agree with Ecology Action. I have a 200 sqft (4 12x4 bed) vegetable
garden and using intensive sqft planting and succession planting, I am
able to just put up enough to last all season. I only have a family of
two. I also grow about 60 different varieties of vegetables. I don't
think there is enough room in just 6 to 8 blocks to provide the needed
variety for a healthy diet from the garden. Now if you don't mind any
thing but parsnips and frozen squash in winter...

Everything I have read, with the exception of Mel's book, seems to
indicate that 100 sqft per adult is needed to grow enough to last all
year, and only if planting intensively and using succession planting.

Other books to try, Jeff Ball's 60 Minute Garden (a little tedious
sometimes and the plan is not very adaptable to individual situations,
but a good starter book) and one called Southern Gardening (even if you
aren't in the South, there are some interesting tables on expected
yields from rows and it is easily converted to beds). To put up the
expected harvest, you might read Rodale's Preserving Summer's Bounty
(excellant tips on cannin, drying, storing, freezing, etc. highly
recommended)

Hope this helps.
