Sears ususally sells a dual tube 40 watt shop light with the tubes
for around $10 each. I mounted three on chains so I could move them
up and down. But generally due to different things growing at different
speeds I use cardboard boxes to raise each seedling tray close to the
lights.
I also taped some aluminum foil, shineyest side out to some cardboard
mounted behind the plants to reflect light back. It has been fine for
starting seeds, and keeping plants alive over the winter. But not very
good for actually producing any crops. My last set of container grown
tomatoes produced fairly well inside in a sunny window. But when I
put them under the lights, they lived, they just quit producing.
Of the 3 fixtures with a total of 6 tubes, 2 are grow tubes and 4 are
normal tubes. I have not noticed any difference in seedings
based on the tubes they were under.
