Hi John,
In my experience keeping the tops of the seedlings within an inch or two
of the tubes has consistently produced top quality seedlings for me.
There are probably many factors that favor this distance in my particular
situation; such as the ambient temperature of my basement in the early
spring is between 40-50 deg. f. The extra heat that the plants are
receiving from this spacing is probably helpful this time of year for me.
I do find that later in the season, when I'm starting fall vegetables I
need a little more distance from the tubes to keep the plants cool, 3-4
inches, or they tend to become leggy even with the high light intensity.
Lastly, I would urge you not to follow any rigid rules when it comes to
gardening. Many of the things I've read about and tried, in gardening,
simply haven't worked for me. Many things that "they" say can't or
shouldn't be done I do quite successfully. You can too.
So go ahead and try something new.
