There is a lot of concern in the UK about the use of peat moss.
It is not a renewable resource and vast areas of land throughout the
world are being destroyed to supply gardenred with peat. There are
other ways of doing things, e.g. making leaf mould, making compost
from household and garden waste. From what I have seen above it seems
that the 'natural' soil is not being conditioned to produce a healthy
productive soil but is being replaced by importing vast amounts of
material. That does not sound so good to me......
