I have no quarrel with what you say.  But, the SQ FT list is based on the
Square Foot Gardening book by Mel Bartholmew--and many on the list consider
it the gospel!  I am a totally organic gardener, myself, but custom build my
soil by sheet composting.  I'm not as lucky as you 
are with soil. I live on a coastal plain that has gumbo clay and 72 inches
of rain annually.  So, raised beds are a necessity and soil amendment is,
too.  If one plants in pure clay soil, plants die from too much water and no
oxygen.  What I'm trying to say is that not all 
growing conditions around the world are the same.  I doubt if you 
have to contend with the diversity and numbers of insects and 
diseases we have here in the tropics.  I know that for a fact,
because my husband was born and raised in Wales.  And, I seen the local
gardens there and have been envious of the wonderful soil and lack of
diseases and insects.
