Hi All,
I just wanted to take the opportunity to post a slightly off-topic
question, since the list has been on a composting roll lately....
My neighbor uses a service called ChemLawn to spray nonorganic goodies
on his front lawn. His lawn is much greener than mine, but mine's OK
looking and healthy. I don't use anything but composted steer manure
and maybe once a year, a weeding formula. When I weed, I don't compost
the grass cuttings for at least a month, hoping that the bad stuff
will be run off by rain or sprinklers by the time I start composting
it again. My question is, can I use my neighbors cuttings? Should I
ask him to find out what ChemLawn uses? What if their formula is
proprietary and they won't tell him? His grass grows fast and is very
green, meaning there's lots of fiber compared to my short grass clips,
and there's probably lots of nitrogen too, which I've been noticing my
garden needs more of now that it's older. I incubate my compost
usually for at least 2 months before using it in the garden, so maybe
this is long enough with turning and watering to get rid of most bad
chems?
Thoughts appreciated.
