Spacing for melons

Hi,

Does anyone have experience growing cantaloupes and watermelons? 

I am trying to decide whether to use trellises, or just let them grow on the 
ground.

Would appreciate hearing pros and cons of each method, as well as the spacing 
you used.

I have two 4 x 8 beds and two 4 x 4 beds in my garden.
