New to List; cinder block beds, thinning seedlings

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hey gang, I'm newly subbed up. Or, rather, Doreen gave me instructions
where the 'old list' wandered off to and I joined. How wonderful to have a
mailbox full of GARDENING topics, at last!!
On the cinder block issue; they're great! We made one bed early this season
and topped it with some old cracked safety glass. I've been using it as a
sprouting bed for lettuce and spinach and will haul the topper off soon and
just use it as a raised bed. The sprouted stuff is being moved out to the
garden as it reaches the glass top. AND, the best of all, you can plant
directly into the pockets of the cinder blocks. Great for things that might
wander off like mints, or things that like the individual attention (I have
a couple of kohlrabi in one of the blocks.) They make great strawberry
planters. (But leave a few unplanted ones so you still have a bench.)
The beds in the garden don't have any borders, they're just mounded dirt. I
didn't want anything permanent till I see what will grow under a big pecan,
and what has to be moved around.

HINT: when you overseed or need to weed tiny seedlings, don't try pulling
out the offenders, just snip the tops off. That way you're not disturbing
the root system of the plant you wanted to keep. Actually, the little root
ball of the plant you sacrificed will help hold the other one in place.
When I sprout seedlings in flats, I usually plant 2 to each little pocket
and snip off the weaker one when they're going good. Trying to save both or
pulling one will result in injuring both root systems when you set them
out.
