Yes. All of the above, in my case. I used two-foot stakes made
from rebar to anchor the bottom course of blocks, filled with
clay soil, compacted, then laid the second and third courses, but
only filled those with dirt (no stakes). Weight is important too;
each block weighs about 35 pounds, so an entire wall of them can
be quite massive. If you only stack them two or three high, they
still will do quite well to hold themselves in place. Paint them if
you're worried about the somewhat industrial look.
