Re: Asparagus help...

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Asparagus spacing for intensive methods is 12"-18"; Johnny's catalog offers
Rutgers University developed Jersey King Crowns, and suggests 12-16 "
spacing.

Shepherd Ogden suggests 15-18" spacings, with the notice that high humidity
areas will have less disease problems with wider spacings; Johnny's claims
that Jersey King is highly disease resistant, thus the closer spacings, I
suppose.

Hope this helps,

Frank--dudn't know about rabbits and 'sparagus, nor how much to grow---but
if ya grow too much it makes a dandy gift or, if ya don't already have too
much filthy lucre, ya could always sell it....:-)

PS--the books say 20-40 roots per person, and Uncle John (That'd be Jeavons,
Of How to Grow More Vegetables....fame) says you can grow 159 'sparaguses
per 100 sq ft on 12" centers, but this is hexagonal rather than square grid
spacing.

At this rate you could get around 60 plants in yer 42 sq ft, or 30 plants
each fer you and your other person.

Remember that 'sparagus is a perennial, the bed could last 20 years, and the
harvest next year should be moderate.

Prepare a very rich soil for the crowns, limed to pH 7.0 or a bit more, and
keep the evil weeds out...

Good growing!
