Re: Slightly off-topic: Fleas

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Zane,
The first year we got a dog, I bought these beneficial nematodes to apply to the lawn.  I believe they were Concern brand, and Burpee was selling them at the time. (Well, it was only my 2nd year gardening, and I was very gullible!)  I don't think Burpee still carries it, but Gardens Alive sells their own brand, Grub-Away.  "controls flea larvae" plus weevils, borers, and grubs.  I can't say for sure it worked, but we have never had much of a flea problem.  Just in case you want to try it.

My vet is great for sales pitches, and we had put the dog on Program, the monthly pills that keep any fleas on the dog from reproducing.  However, this pill doesn't kill live fleas, so you still had to use something topical if a problem starts to develop.  Program was pretty expensive, as was the Advantage monthly liquid the vet sold me.  I have found a much cheaper alternative in a monthly liquid called Biospot which controls both living fleas and any offpspring, which is sold in the Drs. Foster and Smith catalog.  You just separate the dogs fur and apply it to their back.  I've seen a similar product in Pet Smart, for a little more per dose.  (I don't plan to use it until the dog scratches, as I don't like exposing all of us to chemicals if I don't have to.)

Now, if I could just figure out a landscape plan that gives the dog room to play Red Ball !!! where she won't run into my garden plots!

Good luck,
Erica
