Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Denese,
I was just reading the Territorial Seed Catalog last night, and noticed this
information about artichokes that I thought you might find interesting: "Start
seed indoors or in a greenhouse late February to mid-March in individual 4"
pots, and transplant out 8 weeks later, when the soil has warmed. Due to
genetic make-up, about 20% of artichoke plants from seed will be useless, so
make your first cull at transplanting, eliminating the smaller plants.
.......After the first year's artichoke harvest ends, remove off-type and less
vigorous plants...."
I am planning on starting some from seed this year, which is why I just
happened to be reading this, and was wondering where I was going to put all of
the plants the first year, since I ultimately want to end up with 5 plants,
so, it sounds like I will need to plant more than that. I do remember seeing
a commercial artichoke field in Monteray, CA on the Victory Garden, and the
grower was saying that ALL of the current plants are from original starts
brought into the country, I think it was over 30 years ago (maybe longer).
They pick out the best producing plants, and divide and replant the new starts
from the base every three years for maximum harvest.
Comments anyone?
Sandi
