Re: Sweet Potatoes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Katherine,

We are zone 4 and have been growing sweet potatoes for over 12 years in raised
beds. We use a wide row method more than square foot. We mound the soil,
cover it with a length of soaker hose, top off with black plastic and then it
heat up. Here we plant the last week of May. I space the plants 12-18 inches
apart. Once planted we cover with remay and then make a mini greenhouse for
each 4 x 10 bed with clear plastic. We eat sweet potatoes at least once per
week and 50' worth of plants does our family right. I also use raw sweet
potato in the veggie mush I feed our three dogs. After trying many varieties
we have settled on Georgia Jets and get them from Jung's Nursery. I have seen
slips in almost all the major seed catalogues. One secret we had to learn the
hard way is to keep the plants as far away from the tomatoes as possible and
to make sure there has been at least two years between the planting of tomatoes
and sweet potatoes in the same bed. We now do a four point rotation and keep
them on opposite ends of our 15 bed system. Happy growing.

Deany, zone 4/WI
