Getting In The TAN Zone - Eco Act Weather Fix

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

"Kim in Tulsa"

>The weather is incredible here. I think the weather guys on the news have
given up thinking we are going to have any sort of winter! It's actually
going to be around 76 degrees here tomorrow. I told Steve I was going to
plant some lettuce and radishes, just for the heck of it, because it's so
pretty. The radishes, lettuce and spinach we just stuck in the ground in
September are still going strong.

**Heck with that! Get a tan!

>We bought a house that was built in a former bottomland area near a river.
But the soil is known statewide as being very productive.
(The OK. Cooperative Extension Experiment Station is just a mile behind our
house! Field after field of test veggies and such!)

Steve thinks our soil is a tad too sandy, and so we've been augmenting it with
leaves and such.

**Get it moist, grap a handful, see how/how much it falls apart,
& use a $15 kits which gives you ten ea N, P, K, pH tests.

**Were you the one with sunlight hours problems? I'll answer
that tomorrow. No sleep last night.

>I have a feeling we're in for a drought too, if it doesn't rain. It's dry as
can be in the garden right now. I may go out and take some digital pics of
our garden and post them on the web, if anyone is interested...

**Maybe some of you would just like to do something about
that... Yes. 0.2 degreesC per decade up since '76,
and no reason for the change found,
until people are factored in...
Usually some varience. Not these last decades...

CAUTION: the below is eco... so Not Exactly Sq Ft.
This is neat, but tame, comparatively... :>)
Got an eco problem? They will arrange for a scientist to join
your group at the beaureaucratic meeting of whatever,
and present science based reasons for your-eco-side.

Subject: SSI Notice: Expert Scientists Speak Out

  ******************* SSI NOTICE *******************

This notice is to inform you of a remarkable open letter
published recently by the heads of the UK and US national
weather services. In this letter, the two climatologists
confirm the seriousness of human-induced climatic change
and warn against complacency and the dangers of "doing
  nothing" about climatic change.

The letter is dated December 22, 1999 and was published
originally on December 30, 1999 in a large British
newspaper -- The Independent -- but received very little
news coverage in the United States. UCS has learned that
the letter was initiated in response to a December 16
article in USA Today. This article dismissed the
seriousness of climate change and tried to undermine the
scientific credibility of a world map depicting early
warning signs of climate change that was recently published
by UCS and several other environmental organizations. (See
SSI Notice of 11/19/99. Also, check out the web site at:

Subject: SSI Notice: Climate Map Briefing and Discussion
  ******************* SSI NOTICE *******************

  Dear SSI Member,

As many of you know, last month the Union of Concerned
Scientists - along with six other organizations - released a
poster-sized map illustrating the impacts of climate change
around the world (for more info on the map, see
http://www.climatehotmap.org ). Many of you have ordered
copies of this map and expressed interest in using it as an
educational tool. This message is to let you know about two
additional services provided by UCS to help you use the map
  most effectively:

  1) the digital replay of the teleconference briefing on the
  map, available through 1/31/00

  2) an on-going, on-line discussion with the map producers
and other scientists to answer questions about the map,
counter skeptics' arguments, and share ideas for its use --
with new postings as of 1/7/00!

  1) DIGITAL REPLAY

On December 16, 1999, SSI held a teleconference briefing on
the map. About 60 SSI members participated in the briefing
and many others have already had the chance to listen to the
taped playback from the 90-minute call. SSI is making the
digital playback widely available to interested SSI members
who did not have the opportunity to participate in the
  original briefing.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity,
please contact us to get the toll-free telephone number and
the password by replying to this message at
<ssi, etc>. We will send you the briefing playback
instructions at that time. The playback will be available
  through January 31, 2000.

This is what you'll hear in the briefing playback:

Dr. Sharon Locke of UCS and Dr. Janine Bloomfield of the
Environmental Defense Fund provided an overview of the
scientific underpinnings of the map, including explanations
of the "hot spot" selection criteria. UCS Assistant
Secretary Paul Fain reviewed some possible uses of the map
with the media and policymakers and suggested some key
messages to be used in communicating the map's concepts. The
briefing wrapped up with a substantive question-and-answer
  session.

*** Please Note: This replay is being provided at UCS's
expense as a service to SSI participants only. Please do not
distribute the toll-free number and password. Refer other
interested parties to the map website
(http://www.climatehotmap.org ) where they can view and
  order the map.

  2) ON-LINE DISCUSSION

We have set up an on-going web-based forum for SSI members
to continue a discussion about the map. In the context of
this forum, SSI members can address questions to the map's
producers and communicate with each other about their use of
the map. This forum will also be a place to post feedback
and suggestions for updates to the map in the future.

We have posted a set of key messages that will assist you in
talking about the map to reporters, policymakers, and
general audiences, as well as provide you some suggestions
for answering questions from skeptics. In addition, there
are some interesting posts related to additional hotspot
points and global warming "skeptics" approaches to the map.

To enter the forum, go to the UCS website
(http://www.ucsusa.org ) and click on "SSI Members" at the
bottom of the page. This will take you to the SSI Members
Page (username: xxxxx; passcode: xxxxxxxx), where you will
find a news item on the teleconference briefing. Click on
"ongoing discussion" to enter the forum.

*** Please note: The SSI Members Page is intended for use by
SSI members only. Please do not share the password.

As ever, please feel free to send us any comments about the
report itself, the briefing, or the replay feature.
