What zone do you live in? I live in zone 9 and contacted the person
who is in charge of the cooperative extention services and he said
that raspberries do not do well here many times because they are
started in the North and don't do well in the South because of lack
of cold weather. That doesn't sound like the reason why the plants
would just rot in the ground though. I'm planning on buying raspberries
from a local nursery this year and hope that things will work out well
with them. Because they are started down here, they are probably more
adaptable to our climate.
The way I want to tie them into my square foot gardens is that after
I finish one of the 4x4 gardens, I will have a walkway between the outer
fence and the garden edge (about 2 feet). About the middle of the garden
edge, I will
dig out some dirt and put the plant in. I'll put a trellis with it also.
The raspberry plant will be between the fence and the garden. The only
disadvantage is that is will interrupt the walkway around the garden,
especially if I do three of them this way.
