Re: Ideas on books?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Books, now that's something I can talk about. Other than Mel's book, here
are a few I find useful:

* Sunset's "Vegetable Gardening" -- I got mine at a local nursery chain
(Pike's) but probably available from Amazon, etc.

* Don Hasting's "Month by Month Gardening in the South" (Hastings is
another local nursery) -- if you're not in the south, there may be other
books for your region. What I like about this is that, as someone posted,
it gives me an overview of what I should be doing in my garden all during
the year. I HATE it when the month has come and gone and it's only THEN
that I realize or learn I should've done X.

* "Gardener's Desk Reference," Anne Halpin -- loads of useful information
presented in chart and tabular form rather than a lot of text, so the
information is very accessible (at a glance)

* Seed Sowing and Saving, Carole B. Turner, a Storey book -- good infor
about starting seeds, and also about saving them (if you want to plant Open
Pollinated or Non-Hybrid seeds and do that)

* Better Homes and Garden's "The Complete Guide to Gardening" -- a good
general reference

* "Let it Rot!" by Stu Campbell -- compost, naturally

* several books on companion planting;

* several books on diseases and pests, none of which seems all that helpful
when I need help, so I'm still looking for that Rodale "color" guide
(whatever the name), which is out of print

There are many fabulous books out there, and I'm not suggesting these are
the ones anyone must or even *should* have. These are just some I'm glad
I've got.

A great source of free information is your local county extension agent.
Drop by and visit and/or see if there's an associated local university web
page. Or visit other university's web pages. Don't overlook these valuable
resources!!

Hope this helps,
