Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

>Kim, I'm not quite sure why my name was taken in vain here, but
since it was, let me go on record saying I haven't been
irritated by any of the new people. Pat
>>Patricia S Wrote:
  >>Hi, Dan -- welcome>...It seems all us new people have
irritated a few of the old...my original post about the bras on the >trellises
was a serious post and although riddled with humor...

*I've had this happen to me. I was a convenient post to which
to reply, because it contains something on the subject...nothing
more. A case of being in the a certain place at a certain time.
-----------------
>>grew a kind of mini cantalope this year. you get 4-8
like a cherry tomato...wud b cool 4 sq ft Bill
>If that's true I want some of those seeds. Where do I get them.

*Got mine local to SF,Ca.
Will advise name etc., WHEN I REdiscover them.
-----------------
>Railroad Ties..probs?

*Interesting. creosote is a bush used to combat
cancer by certain Am. Natives.
Tar isn't so great. Any PCBs? We used them.
But a pond liner is an idea, but misses the point, as it was
addressed/applied. What if it seeps into the ground, and
you move the beds a couple feet in future years. Just find
out what's in the ties.
------------
>how held timbers together

*I've read of rebar pieces driven into the ground and
each other. Long drill bit required.
------------
>Anybody have an idea for how long something like this might
last in the ground? Or should I debark the inside and paint Ron

*Doing mushrooms? Or not? Wood type? Etc.
--------------
>en for a few years. I used all oak, too. This stuff should last
as long as most anything I could've bought. Wouldn't bother
painting the inside.

*Time depends on wood, treatment capenter ants, termites, fungi,
temp, moisture, wood treatment(s), thicknesses. Up to 5-10
years wood (tee hee) be par, just to hold dirt in place.
---------------
>1 per square foot if the cabbage slightly imature. 1 per 4 square
feet if you want the largest cabbage you can get. Instead of going
for the largest I could get I find I prefer to stagger plant and
harvest smaller (more managable) heads more frequently. Ron S

*This is sensible. But think. Go beyond...
Mel allows 9 per SqFt for carrots. 4 per for___.
Then 1 per for___. It is logical that 2/3rds per is allowed.
And 1/2. 1/4. Maybe 1/9th for a large cabbage? And 1/16th of
a dwarf fruit tree per Square?

*Only thing I've heard is equal rows and columns. Ok.
With 2ea 4x4s beside ea other, I see altenating sqs filled,
which is 9/18ths or 1/2! I can see 4 per 16 Sq also.
So they'd be off center in the SqFt. So? The rows and
columns would be equal. Then they meet the rule.

*Make a template from 2x2s with cuphooks (optional) and strings
to assist in showing each of the 16 squares. Make another with
9 squares for chinese cabbage. SqFt/ Ok. Sq 1.5625Ft.
It obeys Mel's rules. You decide if YOU want big cabbages.
Not lecturing... just an option. Keep your options open.
I mean... does using 4 squares in 16 for a big plant violate?
No. Divide 16SqFt by 9 with a template.
-------------------
>Mel OT because applying engineering?

*No, SqFt-The whole THING is organized engineering approach.
----------------
>I've been using an electric blanket for my home brew beer batches
for years.

*I'd like to hear more. (Names deleted to protect the guilty.)
My place or yours?
Timer and thermostats, I'm too tired to tackle tonight.
-----------------
>Maybe it's related, I got a huge growth of fungus in one bed.
What do you all think this might have been?

*Fungus. Correct temperature, moisture content ~70%,
undisturberd for a week, and correct substrate.
Also called, composting by fungi. (Many kinds/types of fungi.)

>Bill, what a great idea! I used the stockade style years ago,
using driftwood around a herb bed, but your idea of then inoculating
the logs with mushroom spore absolutely sparkles! Margaret L

*They used to call me Twinkletoes, or Professor. I keep an open
and wandering mind. (Eutectic.) Think Kinky. (Yeah, yeah, kinkily,
adverb and all that... yes ending with a preposition.
This ain't english class...) Think like a kid. Stay
mentally warmed up, loose, free. Fly!
----------------------
*Wood type, is sometimes/often an issue.

>Where to get mushroom spore , por favor?
Will they grow in direct sun?

*Will recheck... I think one is www.fungi.com. Prefer, as a
general rule, scattered sun. Could effect this with small shades.
Do only reaset logs, on the shady side, and buy spore-strain
developed for higher temp and light conditions. or you can
buy these logs thru a guy I know for `$8 I think, preinnoculated.
IF, they are incubated, they are about 3fold cost.

*This does effectively 'rot'/compost your "stockade." You MAY
get 2-3-4 years from it only. Then it becomes 'soil-enhancing.'
This works for some folks; not for others. It is a mushrrom's
'fertile soil,' for the correct type of mushroom. Some, prefer
manure, or even paper! But, this is nature at work. You MAY get
this anyway from YOUR fungus, if the wood is untreated...

*Thx!

> building a site and ask you all for your best advice on:
  2. best free web page servers( the people who
invite us to build a web page)
  3. urls of sites to learn how to build a site
Bill and Vera

*www.37.com...search for free sites, etc.
Spaceports comes to mind. Unlimited, if you are having tons of
pics. Critical...Backup your site! Places will corrupt or goof,
and you start from scratch.
  ---------
>Somewhat more difficult to use than squares but it's the sort
of thing engineers seem to like.

*Doesn't say much for Mel... (Tee hee.)
------------
>>Patricia Santhuff, Sunday, January
>>...I've been the queen of *technically* off > topic
questions,ind -- >> oh, things like flowers.
>Many sqft gardeners grow flowers in their sqft herb and vegetable
  gardens. -Olin

*Some flowers can be eaten, or deter insects, attract pollinators.
Am now compiling an expanded master list of these, to include All
other general plant characteristics. Am advised of someone with
a companion guide on weblist I'm on. Believe she mmay accept
merging, as she admits hers may be incomplete or have errors.
Always will be a work in progress, but should be laregly complete
in a few days. Can only devote an hour a day at best. Figure
I'm a third done. that will probably be 1/5th. And will trickle
into it for a few minutes/day, thereafter, with odder
species/varietals/climates/sub-tropicals/etceteras.
-----------
>Sorry, but taking several posts out of context and juxtaposing
them in this manner can be very misleading. The last two lines
referred to building the "stockade" around the raised bed, not
packing mushroom spores. I've never seen anyone do this before,
and don't know why it was done now. Margaret L

*Me either. I actually had to pay attention a little bit. It
could be a handicap for some. You did this just like an engineer,
doing a prototype/draft. To make any sense out of it whatsoever,
we would have to actively read it. Many of us prefer not to do
that. I think you will find that to be the general trend in
America, along with too much TV. Typos throughsome of your
audience all out of whack... especially those who must use a
translator. (Watch your knuckles!) Slang hurts them too.
Guess I should try harder. How internatioanl is this List?
Why do you think English TV didn't really catch on here...?!?
It requires being mentally awake to watch it. LOL
---------------------------------
>One for each foot I believe. Bonnie

*Ok. Bonus Question: 5 points for the correct Qty,
but the correct answer had to be in Square Ft units. :>)
----------------
>jallan wants mushroom link
*It's one of these, and go to Links. There are 2-3, there.
More to come. Or subscribe, and ask also. And see Messages 57-8-9.
2 of these 3 are only pages of Link asfter Link, not yet
w/descriptions. That's a work in progess also.
