Where possible note how tall plants get. Grow taller plants
to the north end of the beds. Plant shorter plants to the south.
If some plants get too big anyway, either trim them back or
cage them into their squares. Take notes in your journal
so that you can adapt your garden practices to your region
your way of growing and your circumstances.
Some plants like tomatoes can go crazy no matter what you
do. To make them fit in the square foot paradigm it is often
necessary to trim them back once they fill the area you have
alloted for them. I grow catnip and some other herbs in my
garden that once they are large enough I trim them down
with lopers to keep them managable. I have certain plants
that for me grow like weeds, these same plants down the
street with my neighbors hardly grow at all. So what others
tell you will only be a starting point, take notes, play,
experiment and take more notes.
