Re: Bush Snap Beans One person Sq Ft

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

On page 118 of John Jeavons' book, "How to Grow More Vegetables, Fruits,
Nuts, Berries, Grains and other Crops on Less Land Than You can Imagine"
(Hey, that really is the title of the book), there is a 100 sqft
one-person, mini-garden plan. He recommends planting 135 bush green
bean seeds in a 10 sqft area the first year, then enlarging the garden
and planting 188 seeds in 14 sqft the second year. Sounds like a lot of
beans for one person. Elsewhere in the book, he recommends spacing the
plants at 6 inches. The math for seeds at 6 inches in 10 sqft only
works out to 40 seeds with a sqft grid, slightly more for his hex grid,
but still far short of 135; but he expects some seed not to germinate
and needs some extra seeds for spot planting. There is also a
miin-garden plan for a family of four. -Olin
