>approx. how many plants of bush snap beans does one need to feed one
person? Seems to me it's a lot; that's why I've never tried them in
my small space. Too much shade here for many veggies! But, I
wouldn't trade the trees for a prairie! :)
*As some may remark... 'How many beans did you eat anyway!?!'
I have found many books don't address this issue. One must
almost check hi-falutin sources on a per acre basis and
calculate the plant spacing and work backward.
Fortunately, I found a little. 1/4 lb per plant, over a few weeks.
When I was a kid, I was bothered by "few" and "several." After
studying this dilemma for years I came upon a well considered
arbitrary arrangement. A couple is 2, a dozen 12. So I had it bracketed. A
few starts at 3 goes to 6. 7-11 is several.
1/4 lb in 3-6 weeks. Slightly more for pole beans. Run them
up a string tied to your tree's branches? I read about 9 on
a Sq Ft tho, and I recall my grandma's bushbeans would be
pressed to fit in a SqFt alone... so 9!?!
Using other info, I deduce a can of beans is about 8 oz.
(w/o liquid) so, 2 plants for a can in a month. IF you had 8
plants survive in a SqFt (if they can), that's a can a week.
They keep well enough in the fridge you should be able to
amass a week's worth. (I have a little trouble with some
of this, so I'm not completely comfortable yet with density.
Whatever bush beans we had did not fit this mold, and
were prodigious.)
But might you be interested in one SqFt's worth? To try?
When I try a new plant, I often use 3 as a number. One
may die or be odd. Two similar ones give me a guess how
that plant will do. And I can treat each a bit differently
very nicely with 3. Water fertilizer, shade, whatever
I am uncertain about. I this case, that would perhaps
imply 3 SqFt, each treated differently. A compromise
then? 2 SqFt, one w/9 (by the book,) and 1 with a
density of only 4-5? And actually check output?
Food for thought...
(Haven't forgotten you! :>)
