Would love to hear how everyone starts their seeds. I've tried different
methods, but haven't really found one yet that is both easy and effective.
What I'm asking about, more specifically, is: What kind of soil do you
start
your seeds in and what type of set up...cups, purchased flats, containers,
etc., do you use for planting them?
Thanks...

I use about 8 purchased flats, assorted food cans, disposable beverage cups,
clear salad or date containers for seed starters. I plant in new sterile
seed starting mix only. Transplant in a mix of compost, local soil and dried
grass clippings for continued growth until I am ready to plant out in the
garden. Flats are nice and easy to use and good for starting seed with the
clear dome and all. The food cans have the tops and bottoms cut out and
filled with the transplant mix, when planting out in the garden I just push
the plant and soil out the top and plant it, when the can gets too decrepit
to use I chuck it out but I can use one can for at least 3 plants in one
season. I buy little clear boxes of dates or salad things since I can reuse
the container for many years if careful. I have a gross of 2" pots and
another gross of 4" pots. This year I want to purchase a gross of 6" pots to
add to my collection. I use disposable beverage cups as I run out of other
things to use to grow things in. Be creative and let your imagination flow
and you will see many things around you that you can use to start plants in.
Even those pesky toilet paper rolls can be used to start peas and beans in,
just cut them in two in the middle and fill with the seed starting mix, imbed
your seed and stand up in a flat keeping in mind that the roll will start to
come apart very soon so this is used only for starting the seed. When the
first 2 or 3 true leaves appear plant out in the garden roll and all.
