I use germinating mix which is soilless and therefore free of disease.
I like accelerated propagating systems for many of my things. I use peat
pellets and peat pots for things like cucumbers and melons which don't
respond well to transplanting.
Because my basement is cold and damp, I grow everything in the house--set up
lights on the dining room table and on my desk. Oh, it's a production, but
don't have it going for more than a couple of months. I have a deck on which
I set up a cold frame. Once it starts to go into spring, I transfer the
plants outside.
I grow mostly vegetables. Once the things in the aps are ready for
transplant, I use a slightly heavier sterilized transplant mix and move them
into six-packs or larger pots if necessary. My tomatoes get transplanted at
least 2 times as they like to get potbound.
Good luck.
