Re: asparagus
Valerie--
I put in an asparagus bed 2 years ago in my "square foot" garden. My raised bed is 12' x 4' and I used 8 feet of it for the asparagus. I put in two trenches the length of the 8'. They were about a foot deep, which we backfilled some with compost to make about 8" deep and added super phosphate. We covered the roots back up to the original soil line. We (my husband and I) ate asparagus the first year and now have more than we know what to do with. We quit harvesting on July 1 and let the plants do their thing. They do get tall and thick. After they have turned yellow in the fall, we cut them down and clean up to discourage any asparagus beetles. We topdress with a heavy dose of compost. This is our second bed of asparagus--we had one at our previous house too--and it has worked well.

Hello fellow gardeners.
I'm a new listmember from upstate NY, where the sun is shining
temptingly - a January thaw is creating patches of grass that seem
bigger than a whole pasture. I'm sitting amidst a pile of seed
catalogs, watching a small red squirrel dance around the bird
feeder. I can't wait to go outside to play, but I know that reality
is months away. January thaws are a mixed blessing. <sigh>
My questions are about asparagus. Do any of you grow it in your
raised bed boxes? What are the spacing recommendations? Is 12" deep
enough?
Thanks for any responses.
Valerie
