Getting warm down under?  By the way we call Australia  "Down Under",  so
what do you call America or England?  Be kind!!!!

In the sqft system, you have answered your own question.  If you are going to
plant a nitrogen hungry plant, add nitrogen.  Mel says, When you get a 4 X 4
square ready for "spring" planting add 1/2 coffee can of 5 -10 - 5 if you
chemical fertilize, full coffee can if you organic fertilize and turn the
soil over.  Sprinkle a hand full of fertilizer if replanting a square. Add
compost, compost, compost every time you replant.  I spray my garden with an
all purpose fertilizer I make up every three weeks to keep things going.
 Works for me.
