My husband made me a grid out of thin redwood slats which I lay on top of
the 4' square at the beginning of the planting season after the soil has
been prepared. If a plant requires more than one square, like zucchini I
put the seeds near the center where four squares meet. I will not plant
zucchini in the square foot garden again because it went wild taking over to
much of the area. It needs a separate spot by itself. When the growing
season is over I remove the grid and get the 4' square ready for winter. It
was very successful this year and I can't wait to start planting again. We
now have three 4' squares, plus three trench areas for climbers ready to
plant this spring.
