Cal. we have rattlesnakes, and I surely wouldn't want them in my vegetable garden, or anywhere near my cats. I live in the suburbs, and they are not a common sight as they do not like people and domestic animals. But I have a whole clan (tribe?, bevy?, crop? :-)) of blue fence lizards, and they love my garden. They don't bother the plants and they eat lots of bad insects. Some don't have tails left, though, with my cats... Are you snakes good snakes or bad snakes? Maybe you should encourage them by building them a woodpile or something near your veggies so they can chase away mice, rodents, rabbits, etc?? Don't be alarmed - I don't much like snakes either and would be startled if a big gopher snake jumped when I lifted a zucchini leaf... but if they are small and harmless??
