Warning, don't try this at home! Last year we had our first garden
at our new house, but between hiring men to remove the horrible
foxtails and multiple weed varieties, getting the chain link fence
up and then preparing the soil, it was already late May or early
June. We sowed our tomato, cucumber, zucchini, eggplant, bell and
jalapeno pepper, corn, radish, and carrot SEEDS directly in the
garden. We were very fortunate. Everything came up and did quite
well, though the harvesting was a bit late for our tastes. This
year we are going to try a few seedlings indoors, especially of
tomato and pepper that don't do well in cool spring weather. We will
be starting them probably in mid-February, so they won't be too
big by transplant time. The rest we will probably direct seed again,
like zucchini and cucumbers. Direct seeding will take place over
mid to early April and on through the summer, for staggered
harvests. Some spring veggies we will plant out in mid March.
We usually don't have a frost after that. You are probably near
the ocean, and so will have even less danger of frost. Hope
this helps.
