I cannot remember what Mel's mix consists of, but in my raised bed I use
a mix obtained at a place called "GardenVille" here in San Antonio.
It's 50% compost, and 50% red sand. It stays permeable(sp) year after
year, and only needs to have more compost added yearly to stay fully
productive. Plants seem to love the mix, and I like it because of its
"workability."
