I haven't tried the red plastic. But I have had some success with
reflecting light into the garden. My garden is in the west end of my
back yard and in spring and fall, my neighbor's motor home is parked
next to the fence, slightly shading the garden. I found a dozen or so
sheets of styrofoam and lined my garden fence with them. The bright
white of the styrofoam reflected plenty of light. If you need extra
light, you might try something like this.
