Yes according to territorial seeds you need to build a plastic shelter for them and cover them when
it rains. This is for late blight which is the potato famine beasty. Territorial seeds
had a display at a garden show in Vancouver a few years ago showing the structure
they suggest which consisted of polythen tubing arched over the plants with
plastic held on by c shaped clips. They sell all this stuff of course. The idea is that,
when it rains the blight spores are thrown up onto the tomato and I guess the moisture
animates them and bingo!
When I gardened in Vancouver I got a reasonable crop by planting the very
earliest tomatoes in the territorial catalogue. It really is a disgusting disease.
