Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi, and a happy new gardening year to all. I've been
lurking on the list for awhile, but now that all my new catalogs have arrived I
can't resist asking a few questions!
My first one is, is there any way besides having a greenhouse
that I could start seeds outside? Has anyone tried starting them in a cold
frame, or inside a Wall o Water? I've tried starting seeds inside in the
past, but I have a cat who has thwarted my efforts each time. He doesn't
try to "go" in the potting mix, but he likes to bat things around and
knock them off tables and counters. Specifically, I'd like to try starting
Jenny Lind melon seeds, and I'm in zone 6b (South Jersey).
Next, if I do find a good way to start these melons
(canteloupes, really)-- can you train them fully vertically such as in a tomato
cage, or do they need to be on a trellis that goes at a 45 degree angle as I've
seen in several books?
Thanks!
Erica
