Re: Summer and Winter Squash

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I've been going to write about squash, so I'm glad that someone else got
the thread going.

Does anyone have any suggestions for raising squash and not having to
lose it all to vine boreres? We used to live in Detroit, and up there we
had to give our squash away because we got so much, with minimal problems
with vine borers. Here in South Carolina, we are lucky to get 5 zucchinis
or yellow squash from our plants before they succomb to borers. I try to
do things as much as possible without pesticides, but I'm about ready to
cave on this one! Are there varieties of zucchini or yellow squash that
are less prone to invite borers?

The only kind of squash that I've found so far that resists borers is
butternut squash. Even our delicata got attacked by borers this past
summer.

In reading Eliot Coleman's book _Four Season Harvest_ recently, I noticed
that he suggests Zucchetta Rampicante. According to Shepherd's Garden
Seeds catalog, this variety is supposed to be borer resistant. I like
that it climbs -- very good for the sqft garden. If you've raised it
before, how does its taste, etc. compare to zucchini?

Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc.

Rob
