Try cement blocks instead of lumber.  The blocks are 12" long and 8" high,
perfect for beds, and they cost about $1.05 apiece.  It may sound like a lot
of money, but you never have to replace them.  Also, you can plant crops in
the block holes.  I plant strawberries and herbs, and they all do well.
