Re: raised beds - tip on width
Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
My raised beds consist of 4 4x28 ft beds plus 8 4x4ft squares. I made the big
beds out of barn beams in the fall of 97. By dumb luck on my part, 2 of the beds
- outside edge to outside edge measure just under 14feet.
Two months ago, I happened to get a free hoop house (pipe frame greenhouse with
steel 1.5 inch pipe bent into half circles that measure 14ft wide at the base.
Now, I can cover all my beds with the pipe frame greenhouse.
You space the "bows" 4 feet apart and cover the whole deal with greehouse film.
Those of you laying out gardens might want to give Four Season Harvest by Elliot
Coleman a look. I got lucky with regard to how I laid out my beds but go to a
bookstore and give this a look before you turn the first shovel. You will be
glad. Also has some good info on root cellars for those of you interested in
storing your harvest. Book is available at Amazon and other net sources. With
cold frames and a hoop house, I will be able to grow something all year long
here in Eastern PA Zone 6a.
I know you might just be putting down a few squares but what you do now effects
how you expand your garden. I started with 2 squares and now have the equiv. of
36 squares. Where I put the first 2 determined what I did after that so it pays
to think a few steps ahead of what you plan to do this season. Think Phase 1,
Phase 2.......
Now I gotta go finish cleaning up those seed starting trays.
