How to ease water chores in the heat of summer

I constructed an irrigation system that waters my raised 4x4 beds as
a weekend project back in the spring. I knew I would 'get busy'
being a single dad with three kids and now that we are at 105
degrees days here in Texas, its a pleasure to watch my garden water
itself. :)

Total cost was about $40 in materials (less the water hose I already
had) and an afternoon of labor which feeds (2) 4x4 beds. I plan to
expand this to include 2 more beds next year which should run about
another $20 in parts. Biggest expense was the timer ~$20 (at Home
Depot) and the extra drip hose left over (plenty for next year).

Water hose runs out to the garden area and feeds a PVC pipe with T
joint between two beds. PVC then has adaptors and small hose clamp
to attach "standard" 1/2 inch drip irrigation hose which in turn
attaches to 1/4 inch drip irrigation hose, 4 lines per bed for each 1
foot row.

I have had to give a little exta watering attention to a row of
strawberries (in order to get them to grow "bigger") and a bit to the
bush beans(to ensure they were kept moist before seeds sprouted), but
have otherwise been genuinely pleased with this performance of this
"what can I do while I wait for things to grow spring Saturday
afternoon project".

Of course, mulching goes along way to maintaining moisture.

Steve :)
