How about sugar snap peas? They are prolific, fast (some varieties produce
in 60 days) and tolerate brief hot weather spells. Also, there are
radicchio, mesclun, cilantro (to make salsa from all those tomatoes!) and
broccoli--direct seed it into warm ground.

Subject: ideas for new crops?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Everyone,

I'm afraid my garden has been a struggle this year. I was forced to pull
out a tomato plant and some dead cucumbers. (again!) Also, lost a hot
pepper plant. Does anyone have any ideas for replacements that produce fast
and can tolerate heat. I have two squares I can use vining plants in.
Maybe some of those purple beans mentioned by everyone? (since I've lost
most of my bush beans also.) I live in Montana (the "banana belt", meaning
not the coldest part of the state) so my growing season is flying by. I'm
having a little luck with shade screens and spinach and lettuces for now and
am going to put in some swiss chard. We should get a break from the really
hot weather soon. Our hot spells (mid to high 90's) usually only last a
week or two before we get a break in the 70's and 80's. So it's not constant
highs from now until first frost. I suspect some of my problems this year
have to do with my patio squares. Mel says you can use 1 x 6's but I had my
doubts about success in such shallow soil. My tomatos in 5 gal containers
are doing great, so this may be the culprit. Thanks to all for any
ideas.
