Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Everyone,
I'm afraid my garden has been a struggle this
year. I was forced to pull out a tomato plant and some dead cucumbers.
(again!) Also, lost a hot pepper plant. Does anyone have any ideas
for replacements that produce fast and can tolerate heat. I have two
squares I can use vining plants in. Maybe some of those purple beans
mentioned by everyone? (since I've lost most of my bush beans also.) I live in
Montana (the "banana belt", meaning not the coldest part of the state) so my
growing season is flying by. I'm having a little luck with shade screens
and spinach and lettuces for now and am going to put in some swiss chard. We
should get a break from the really hot weather soon. Our hot spells (mid
to high 90's) usually only last a week or two before we get a break in the 70's
and 80's. So it's not constant highs from now until first frost. I suspect some
of my problems this year have to do with my patio squares. Mel says you
can use 1 x 6's but I had my doubts about success in such shallow soil. My
tomatos in 5 gal containers are doing great, so this may be the
culprit. Thanks to all for any ideas.
