Re: what do you make your raised beds from?

Hardware store people are full of pulp. I have fir (2X10) raised beds that I've had for years. The wood was never treated or painted, and I don't see any signs of decay. Last year we built several more raised beds of 2x10 and 2X8 fir, all as they came from the lumberyard. Not pressure treated, no chemicals, nada.

I lost my mobility a couple of years ago (amputation), and when I found out some people in the same boat were gardening from the seat of an electric scooter, I bought one and set out to convert my veggie garden to raised beds. My husband was not in shape to fill raised beds, so I hired a magician with a backhoe to scoop my garden soil into ridges, the base of each about 4 feet across, with a four foot wide path on each side. Then we hired a guy to build containment boxes out of the fir around each ridge. After that, even I, from the seat of the scooter, could rake soil down into the boxes. That's the easiest way to do it, and it didn't really cost all that much either. Margaret L

Hi everyone. I am new to this method of gardening and this list (a.k.a.
lurker). So far so good, this year. We are on the border between zone 4&5,
and so mostly just harvested radishes and lettuce at this point. I was
wondering what matierials people here have used to make their lead boxes.
Given that pressure treated wood is supposed to leak bad chemicals, I don't
want to use that. The people at the local hardware store say nothing else will
last more than a year. I would love to make some raised boxes before the
summer ends, but don't know what to use. I would love any ideas. Thanks,

Jeanie in Vermont
