We "use" hardpacked sandy soil, the only native ingredient in our
veggie garden. The paths between our garden beds never get any water,
they were weeded to death, and they get stamped down so hard,
then baked in the summer heat, that I don't need any mulch. One weed
per week, per 10 sq. ft. - no problem!
But really, if I had my druthers, I'd probably use pea gravel. If the
pathways ever got wet, with all our big rocks, we'd have a real bad
slug and snail problem, and we do have an occasional one now. I
don't like plastic mulch in So. Cal. - it seems to attract bugs and
sometimes rots in the sun.
Good luck, whatever you choose,
Shawn
