You may have the same problem my neighbor and I both had last year --
Tomato bugs (probably not the correct name). They are as green as the
stock and can be as round as your thumb. Because of the green color,
they can be difficult to see, and they can eat a tomato plant to the
ground!!! My husband just plucked them off the plan (I won't touch bugs
- eek!!).
As for growing more plants, I live right next to you in Lakewood. I know
of people who have had tomato plants that produce for two years. Our
growing season here is pretty much year round as we only get about a week
or two of frost. I would definitely start more plants.
Make sure you do get ready for the suckers to come back. My experience
is that any bug you have this year will probably be around next. I've
had good luck this year with insecticidal soap.
